As an MC, you need to realize that your personality sets the tone for the event. If the program flops you will be blamed for conducting the program poorly; in the same vein, if the event turns out successful you will be praised. If you’ve been asked to be an MC for a friend’s wedding or any other event, then read on to get some tips on how to be a great one.

MC

#1. Attitude

As the MC, your personality/ attitude counts a lot because it gives people the lead. If you are too uptight and serious, you can be sure the whole show will be stiff. The same way if you are boring, then your crowd will respond the same way. You should always strive to find a balance between being funny, brief and focused. Even if something goes wrong or someone is out of line, the MC must stay up-beat.

#2. Know your responsibilities

Being the MC does not make you the main star of the day. It is important to know your role so you don’t go overboard and mess the event up. The responsibilities of the MC includes keeping the interest of the audience and making sure they are having fun while keeping the event flowing and bridging between segments of the event as well as sticking to time, to ensure that the person of the event is being celebrated etc.

#3. Stay organized

For most events there is already a set agenda given to the MC, so take out time to review it. Consider when you are expected to get on and off stage and also the time limit given to each speech. Write down what you are going to say during the event and practice over and over again. This should be something you are comfortable with so that all you will need is to have small note cards to keep yourself on track. Try to stay in touch with the chief organizer to be aware of any changes that may have happened.

#4. Stick to the time

Some people just have a hard time letting go of the mic. Before speakers come up the stage tell them how much time they have. After giving them the mic, its best to stand close as that will remind them that they have a time limit; otherwise, if you go away they might talk until they bring the heavens down which will definitely bore the guests.

#5. Be prepared

As the MC, you have the whole show in your hands.  Your role is key in making the event a total success or a total failure. If someone does not show up or something unexpected happens, be prepared to cover it up so well that your guests don’t even notice.

MC’s usually crack jokes to make people feel more relaxed; however, if you’re not good at jokes, stay away from them. You can go in for a poem or something similar. Stay positive and help make the ceremony a remarkable one.
