#1. Specialize

There are different areas when it comes to event promotion. You may want to decide if you want to specialize in promoting concerts, parties, games etc. it is important to specialize in one area so as to channel your efforts and work towards success. The advantage of specializing is that one can quickly build a niche and a reputation of a specific type of event management perhaps until business is going great and you can afford to expand into other areas.

#2. Recognize your costs and risks

In every career there are associated risks and it’s only wise to conduct thorough research on them. Being a promoter is a very risky and stressful job. You need to work really hard and have a great personality since your job is all about getting people to be interested in your event. Remember to be consistent in making all your events successful otherwise even a few ruined ones could spoil your business.

When it comes to costs, it’s important that you recognize all of them so you can set the fees for your services. Do not forget that your fees should be able to cover costs and still be able to get you some change in your wallet.

#3. Be qualified

You might want to consider a degree or at least a certificate in event promotion. There are a number of universities, colleges or other intuitions that offer such courses. Many corporations and some members of the general public look for these qualifications when hiring planners. This gives you an edge over those who are not qualified. In addition to this, you might also want to have your own business cards.

#4. Get some experience

To gain experience, you could start off with an internship in the marketing and promotions field or better still, start with smaller events that are not very complicated to handle in order to be acquainted with the job. For example if you specialize in promoting concerts, you can start with school concerts.

# 5.Expand your network

As an event promoter, you will need a lot of contacts. Even though your experience matters, you also need to know people that can help. Join appropriate groups and participate in discussions, attend seminars, exhibitions, and trade shows, which are great ways of expanding your contacts and network.

Another way to expand your network is to use social media to your advantage. Advertise your services on every social media channel you are in. if there are pictures of your successful moments, post those pictures.

Event promotion is a people’s business so developing your people skills is important. You need to be able to have your way with people to get them to come for your event so that you can get those contracts!

Now you have an idea what event promotion entails.  Go out there and do your thing!
